    Title:
    elective course topics for consideration
    Content:

As part of ongoing program development, I would like to begin a conversation on which topics you are interested in for elective course development.  Please consider not only those topics that are of interest to you from a student perspective, but also which topics you would find useful in the working world.

Use the attached list of suggestions to note your top THREE choices. You can use the form to select and email it to me at ekeavney@apus.edu. You can also respond here in the Lounge which will be a good way to stimulate conversation about possibilites. I value input from both students and faculty and I hope that you take the time to give this topic serious consideration.  Thanks.

      Hi Elaine!

Out of the topics you presented, CAM, health promotion across the lifespan, and music in nursing (what a fun, refreshing elective that would be!) would be my top 3 choices. Of note, the 2 most relevant and eye-opening electives I have taken were Intro to anthropology and human ecology. They helped to set human health needs in an historical and environmental context. Some relation of human ecology to nursing practice would be interesting. It really complemented my nursing courses.

I like the suggestions.  With the popular issues of informatics, the aging of America, Gerontology, and Health Promotion across the Lifespan would be my top three choices.

I had a suggestion outside of this Forum to consider Parish Nursing and School Nursing. You can add those to the list of considerations as well.

To clarify about the veterans' issues, I may not have made it clear in my suggested title. I recently attended an AACN-sponsored webinar about the relationships being developed between VA hospitals and schools of nursing. One of the speakers mentioned that they had develped an elective on veterans' health issues, recognizing the many health problems, both mental and physical, that are occuring as a result of the Middle East deployments over the last decade.  This type of course is what I had in mind when I wrote "veterans' issues".

I really enjoy both Ethics and Health Care Law. I think both of those courses carry lifelong messages in nursing and also allow the student to understand some of the consequences of their actions while in a learning environment. Ethical issues are included in some of our classes which is good. Once I got into some of the legal issues in nursing and what can happen from a very benign standpoint, my eyes were opened!

I would love to take a seperate course on Genetics/genomics as I believe that this is going to be a very important aspect in nursing in the future. My second elective would be nursing informatics since technology is also advancing at a very fast pace and it is vital for nurses to be competent in using technology. My final choice would be health law, it is a topic I am not overly familair with and one that I would like to gain more knowledge on.

Thanks for all of your suggestions and comments.  I will be looking for text books and other resources and beginning the more detailed process of getting approval for elective courses in preparation for launching some of them next year.
